Originally built on the site of 2 cottages, so that local people had somewhere to buy beer, the hotel takes its name from the whortleberries, or hurts, which grow locally in the village on nearby Pitch Hill, the site of one of the village's scenic walks. The hotel's restaurant, Oscars, has an impressive reputation for its fine food and the hotel has an enviable reputation for the quality of its hospitality.
